On Wednesday 25 March, the Installation of the Most Revd and Right Hon Dame Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury took place at Canterbury Cathedral.
More than two thousand people attended the service, including senior members of the Royal Family, Anglican clergy and leaders from across the Church of England and Anglican Communion plus leaders from other faiths, charities, healthcare workers and school children. Bishop Sarah and The Very Revd Philip Plyming were both in attendance.
In her installation sermon, Archbishop Sarah reflected on Mary’s response to God’s call, “Here I am.” Just as Mary trusted in God’s promises, the new Archbishop of Canterbury reminded Christians that they too are called to step forward in faith to join in God’s work in the world. She emphasised that this calling is not carried alone, but together, as pilgrims sustained by God’s grace, bearing witness through acts of love, service, and hope in the midst of a broken world.
Archbishop Sarah said: “God is at work in the good news of the gospel and in the hearts and lives of ordinary people, who – like Mary – have the audacity to believe that with God we can do extraordinary things.”
Closing her sermon, Archbishop Sarah called on all God’s people to respond with courage and humility, trusting that God is already at work, and inviting each of us to say, “Here I am,” as we take part in His transforming mission.
